ਰਾਗੁ ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਛੰਤ ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ਮਿਠ ਬੋਲੜਾ ਜੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੋਰਾ ॥ ਹਉ ਸੰਮਲਿ ਥਕੀ ਜੀ ਓਹੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਬੋਲੈ ਕਉਰਾ ॥ ਕਉੜਾ ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਗਵਾਨੈ ਅਉਗਣੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਚਿਤਾਰੇ ॥ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਸਦਾਏ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਭੰਨੈ ਘਾਲੇ ॥ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਵਾਸੀ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਨੇਰੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਨੇਰਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਜਣੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੧॥
ਰਾਗ ਸੂਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ‘ਛੰਤ’ (ਛੰਦ)। ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ (ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਦੇ ਕੌੜਾ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਯਾਦ ਆ ਜਾਏ, ਪਰ) ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਕੌੜਾ ਬੋਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੋਲਦਾ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਕੌੜਾ (ਖਰਵਾ) ਬੋਲਣਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਾਡਾ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਔਗੁਣ ਚੇਤੇ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ। ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ-ਇਹ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ-ਕਦੀਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ) ਕੀਤੀ ਘਾਲ-ਕਮਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਦੇਂਦਾ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੇਰਾ ਸੱਜਣ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੱਤ ਨੇੜੇ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੇਰਾ ਸੱਜਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।੧।
रागु सूही महला ५ छंत ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥ मिठ बोलड़ा जी हरि सजणु सुआमी मोरा ॥ हउ समलि थकी जी ओहु कदे न बोलै कउरा ॥ कउड़ा बोलि न जानै पूरन भगवानै अउगणु को न चितारे ॥ पतित पावनु हरि बिरदु सदाए इकु तिलु नही भंनै घाले ॥ घट घट वासी सरब निवासी नेरै ही ते नेरा ॥ नानक दासु सदा सरणागति हरि अम्रित सजणु मेरा ॥१॥
राग सूही में गुरु अर्जनदेव जी की पावन बाणी ‘छन्त’ में परमात्मा के प्रेम, उसकी मिठास और उसकी अपार दया का सुंदर वर्णन मिलता है। गुरु साहिब हमें समझाते हैं कि अकाल पुरख एक है और वह सतगुरु की कृपा द्वारा प्राप्त होता है।हे भाई! मेरा मालिक-प्रभु इतना प्यारा और मीठे बोल बोलने वाला मित्र है कि मैं उसे याद करते-करते थक गई हूँ, परंतु मुझे उसका कभी कोई कड़वा बोल याद नहीं आता। प्रभु सदा प्रेम और दया से भरा हुआ है। वह सभी गुणों का खजाना है और किसी के अवगुणों को अपने मन में नहीं रखता।वाहेगुरु का स्वभाव ही ऐसा है कि वह विकारों में फँसे जीवों को भी पवित्र कर देता है। यह उसकी आदि से चली आ रही करुणा है। वह अपने भक्तों की सच्ची मेहनत और भक्ति को कभी व्यर्थ नहीं जाने देता। जो भी प्रेम और सच्चे मन से उसका स्मरण करता है, प्रभु उसकी कमाई स्वीकार करता है।गुरु साहिब आगे बताते हैं कि वह प्रभु केवल किसी एक स्थान पर नहीं, बल्कि प्रत्येक शरीर में, हर जीव के भीतर और सबके अत्यंत निकट निवास करता है। वह हमसे दूर नहीं है, बल्कि हमारे अपने हृदय में ही बसता है।दास नानक विनम्र होकर कहते हैं कि मैं उसी प्रभु की शरण में रहता हूँ। वही सच्चा मित्र है, वही आत्मिक जीवन देने वाला है और वही हमारे जीवन को शांति, प्रेम और आनंद से भर देता है।इस शबद से हमें यह शिक्षा मिलती है कि परमात्मा सदा दयालु है। वह हमारे दोषों को नहीं देखता, बल्कि प्रेम से हमें अपने चरणों से जोड़ता है। इसलिए हमें भी हर समय उसके नाम का स्मरण करना चाहिए और उसकी शरण में रहकर जीवन को सफल बनाना चाहिए।
