Introduction
Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the Fifth Sikh Guru, became the first martyr in Sikh history in 1605. Despite severe torture, Guru Ji remained immersed in Naam and accepted the Divine Will with the immortal words:
“ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਂਗੈ ॥”
“Whatever You do is sweet and acceptable to me, O Lord. Nanak asks only for the treasure of Your Name.”
This day-wise account highlights the events leading to Guru Ji’s Shaheedi.—Day 1:

Arrest and Imprisonment in Chandu’s House
Jeth Vadi 14, 1605 Emperor Jahangir ordered the arrest of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Guru Ji was brought to Lahore and handed over to Chandu Shah, who held a personal grudge against the Guru. Chandu imprisoned Guru Ji in a dark underground cell located in the basement of his residence.
What Happened?
Guru Ji was isolated from the outside world. Orders were given that Guru Ji should receive no food, water, or proper rest. The five Sikhs accompanying Guru Ji were locked in separate cells. Chandu repeatedly pressured Guru Ji to accept Jahangir’s demands and agree to his daughter’s marriage proposal for Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Guru Ji calmly rejected these conditions and remained absorbed in meditation.
Spiritual Lesson : Guru Ji demonstrated that no worldly power can shake one who is connected to the Divine.
Day 2:

The Boiling CauldronJeth Sudi 1After failing to break Guru Ji’s spirit through imprisonment, Chandu escalated the torture. What Happened?

Guru Ji was forced to sit inside a massive copper cauldron. The vessel was filled with water. A fire was lit beneath the cauldron. The water slowly heated and eventually began boiling. For nearly twenty-four hours, Guru Ji remained seated peacefully while the boiling water scalded His body. Remarkable CourageGuru Ji did not cry out in pain. No anger was shown toward the torturers. He remained absorbed in Simran and accepted God’s Will. His body blistered severely, yet His meditation remained uninterrupted.
Spiritual Lesson: True spiritual strength comes from complete surrender to Waheguru.
Day 3:

Burning Sand and Unimaginable Torture The torture continued as Chandu sought new methods to inflict pain.
What Happened?
Guru Ji was seated on a burning iron plate. Red-hot sand was poured over His head and body. Boiling water was also thrown upon Him repeatedly. Despite unbearable suffering, Guru Ji remained serene. Witnesses were astonished by the Guru’s calmness and divine radiance.
Spiritual Lesson : The body may suffer, but a soul united with God remains untouched.
Day 4:

Final Days of Divine Acceptance
By now Guru Ji’s physical condition had deteriorated severely.
What Happened?
Continuous torture had caused deep wounds and blisters.
Chandu believed Guru Ji would eventually surrender.Instead, Guru Ji continued reciting Gurbani and meditating on Naam.
The Guru inspired Sikhs around Him through His steadfast faith.
The sacred words:
“Tera Keea Meetha Laagai”
became a living example through Guru Ji’s actions.
Spiritual Lesson :
Faith is tested during hardship, not comfort.
Day 5:

Bath in Ravi River and Divine Union
The Final DaySeeing that torture had failed, Chandu planned another cruel method. He intended to sew Guru Ji inside a fresh cowhide.
Before this could happen, Guru Ji requested permission to bathe in the Ravi River.
What Happened?
Chandu allowed Guru Ji to go, hoping the cold water would increase His pain.
Ten soldiers were assigned to accompany Him.
Five devoted Sikhs also went along.
Bhai Pirana Ji helped Guru Ji walk because His feet were covered in blisters.
Upon reaching the Ravi River: Guru Ji washed His hands and face.
He drank some water.
Bhai Lenggah Ji lovingly cleaned Guru Ji’s feet.
Guru Ji then sat down and recited: Sri Jap Ji Sahib, Sri Sukhmani Sahib, Vadhans Di VaarMaru Dakhne
Guru Ji instructed the Sikhs that His body should not be cremated but allowed to merge with the waters.
Divine Departure : After entering the Ravi River, Guru Ji merged into the Divine Light. The sky reportedly turned red, and countless people witnessed the miraculous event. Thus, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji attained Shaheedi, becoming the first Sikh martyr and forever inspiring humanity with the power of faith and acceptance.
Spiritual Lesson : The soul that remains united with God never dies; it merges back into the Eternal One.
